Today is the second day at Stanford University and we had anthropology
lessons and creative writing lessons today. The anthropology lessons is very
interesting lesson as we had never learnt anything like that before,
anthropology can truly help us in daily life by reflecting and questioning of
one’s belief and the reason behind someone’s point of view. Anthropology is basically the studies about
human behavior towards different situations and it includes the reasons behind
their actions and a lot of questioning is involved. It takes the studies of
humanities to the fundamental basis which can show the intentions and history
of human behavior which fascinates us. We had a fun time in class debating and
questioning topics such as Brexit, the difference and similarity between Hong
Kong and Mainland China, and the problem in modern day society by reviewing one
of the paper “Body ritual in Nacirema” which describe the America in a third
person point of view.
Creative writing is also a special lesson in which we
review and understand the art of rhetoric, it show different side of the
language in which we approach literature from a more logical and formal side
than what we have in usual. We learnt about ethos, pathos and logos in rhetoric
which can help us to aim to persuade with the best way in the situation in the
form of advertisement or everyday life situation. Our group has the chance to
make an advertisement on an imaginary invention “earcording” which is an ear
piece for recording. We also learnt the different aims of advertisement and how
to make a good advertisement. We truly learnt a lot about the use of languages
and the aim of persuasion, which will be useful for our future careers if we
are perusing career in Law, Business, Media and Journalism.
Yesterday we had a campus tour, through this tour, we explored a small portion of the huge campus and it was mind blowing. The campus is exceptionally pretty and Stanford do have clear sky and air which we cannot experience in Hong Kong, the views are amazing and fascinating. It is very different from the university we can see in Hong Kong as Stanford is filled with trees, grassland, and water fountain, it gives us a refreshing view of what a university look like and it is a perfect place for studying.
