Group 9:

Today, we had our long-awaited visual design class, we get to make use of our imagination and creativity to make our own masterpiece. First, the teacher Bill taught us some basic techniques by creating 3-D shapes from 2-D images. We added shadings to create contrast and make use of perspective to create realistic images. We also learnt to draw some basic containers such as spheres, cylinders, cones, cubes and so on. After that, we had a simple task of trying to draw a Coca Cola bottle as best as we can. At first it was a bit difficult as we weren't sure of the proportions, but after Bill taught us some tricks, it was much easier. Later, he told us to create any random story from interesting items. Our group came up with an interesting story of a bear going on a holiday at the beach, in which he saw giant pineapples and peaches. He encouraged to unleash our potential and that there are no mistakes in art. It doesn't matter whether the story makes sense, art is an representation of one's feelings. We finished up our Coca Cola bottle sketch by adding background and make use of thick and thin lines, we were all very satisfied with the outcome. The final assignment was to draw out all the items from our story to create a still life composition. He demonstrated to us how to do it and we were prepared to finished this assignment by ourselves. It was truly an inspiring lesson in which we learnt to express ourselves through the universal language of art.

Our afternoon was well spent at the Silicon Valley for our academic field trip. We first hit the Computer History Museum which consists of a wide array of exhibitions about calculators, analog computers, mainframes, minicomputers, digital logic, computer games, artificial intelligence, and many more. We viewed exhibitions on computer history on the ground floor where we were astonished at the ancient type writers. Next we visited a prototype of the Google Self Driving Car. It is impressive how modern technology has advanced- enabling cars to drive autonomously with merely sensors. Besides we roamed about the other exhibitions- reading various information boards and watching movies/talks. Our scientific and mathematical knowledge have indeed been broadened through such a experience. Last but not least we checked out the souvenir store where we encountered a plethora of peculiar products ranging from alien ice cream, star wars themed candies, galaxy themed shirts etc. Moving on to the last field trip destination of the day, we visited the headquarters of Facebook where we snapped a photo in front of a "like" logo. Unfortunately we were unable to take a more profound visit in Silicon Valley and we reluctantly left at dawn. We wish we could visit this place again!
