Group 9:
The day commenced with a soothing morning breeze as we approached our classrooms for our first lesson of the day- anthropology. After introducing ourselves, we were taken into view the subject of anthropology, which is linked with the study of economics, human behaviour, sociology, etc. Next we took turns to read aloud the article "The Body Rituals of the Nacirema" written by a famous anthropologist. We acknowledged various aspects of the peculiar tribe, including their economy, superstitions, civilisation, religion, and culture. After scanning through the article, we came into consensus that the people of the tribe were arrogant and self centered. Yet it was only when we were told us to spell "Nacimera" backwards that we realized the tribe refers to American. The article, in fact, satirizes the distorted elements of the American civilisation, provoking us readers to contemplate about the the problems of the status quo. It was enthralling to view America in such perspective, uncovering the features beneath its glorious side. Next we analysed several pictures that delineate the relationship and differences between our hometown, Hong Kong, and China. It magnified our interest in the behaviour of Chinese citizens, and we discovered the reasons contributing to such scenario. It was surely a memorable lesson!
In the afternoon, we had a very interesting design thinking workshop. Once we enter the room, we immediately saw an inspirational quote by Helen Keller, encouraging us to be daring in life and try more different things. Our teachers YiZhang and Monzi first helped us relax ourselves by having a quick meditation session, teaching us how to make use of deep breaths to calm ourselves. We also had a fun approach of how we introduce ourselves, in which the classmate sitting next to us introduces us! After that, they brought us out to the design school to really experience the process of design thinking authentically. However before that, we took some time out in the grass for a creativity gym session to prepare ourselves for the real deal. Not only did we learnt to express our creative and innovative ideas, we also learnt to express using body movements and to collaborate with others. The best part of this session was working together in teams to create a new edition iPhone 10.5 and the Golden Gate Bridge, we had an amazing time. Finally, we got to visit the Stanford Design School. We were quite astonished to learn that it is a place not only for design students, but for students from different academic fields to get together and come up with new ideas. The design and furniture of the D-School is also tailor made so as to provide a comfortable environment to suit students' needs. At last, we played a fun game of trading paper clips for anything with absolute strangers in the Stanford campus, it really helped us with our courage and confidence to speak out and think on our feet. We truly learnt how to create the best ideas through this short but valuable class.
