 16/7/2016

Today was our last day in Stanford. We went on our last excursion trip to Capitola.  It was a really cloudy day at first but it turned sunny when we arrived at the beach. We took a lot of photos there. We played with the water by the seaside and played volleyball as well. There were a lot of seaweed in the water and we took a lot of time to wash them away from our feet! However, we did not manage to get the Stanford lunch as planned. So we went to Five Guys to have burgers as our lunch. All group members had cheeseburgers and we had ordered different toppings. It was really yummy and some of us even had milkshake. It was really delicious. After lunch, we went back on the tour bus and headed back to our dormitory. We were all very tired, so we had a good sleep on the bus!

We signed out after we went back to the dorm and our group first went to drink Jamba Juice. The fruit smoothies were very delicious! Next we went to the Stanford market.  The things there were very cheap, such lip balms and other accessories. Some of them were only 3 US dollars, but they are sixty dollars or more in Hong Kong. We bought a lot of snacks and other items as souvenirs for our relatives and friends. We then later went to the Stanford Bookstore and we found a lot of bargain books. Though they were a bit dirty, they were sold at a really low price and we bought few books. Also, some of us had bought more Stanford University clothes. Our bag was heavy and full after we had finished our shopping plans. We had a really great time exploring the Stanford campus one last time. We all felt sad as it was the last time for us to run around the Stanford campus freely in this trip. We really wish to have a second chance to come to Stanford again and visit our home for these 2 weeks. Time flies really quickly and it is the end of our trip in the blink of an eye.   We have learnt a lot in Stanford.  It was a great opportunity for us to travel out of Asia.  Thanks to all the teachers and counselors for taking care of us.  Also thanks to our loving parents who gave us the opportunity to come here to experience this unforgettable trip.  Thank you!

After breakfast, we had Anthropology as our first lesson today. It was the study of humans, such as human relationship with the nature. We learnt that in Anthropology we had to use a different perspective to see something familiar in an unfamiliar way. We read an article about the rituals of Nacirema. At first we thought that it was something uncivilized and they were a group of people who were religious and sadistic. But then the teacher asked us to spell Nacirema backwards, and we found out that it was Americans! We were really surprised and interested how differently we saw Americans when we use a different perspective. After that, we learnt how to apply Anthropology to world issues such as “Brexit”. We discussed the possible reasons why Britain wanted to join the European Union at first and why Britain wanted to leave the European Union. We also had a vote on whether Britain should leave the European Union. We also watched a video of Hong Kong people comparing Hong Kong with China. Moreover, we watched some comics drawn by Hong Kong people about Hong Kong vs China. It was really ironic and interesting.  The pictures talked about how different Hong Kong is from China.  For example, the traditional Chinese word of ‘love’ is with a heart inside and the simple Chinese word is without a heart inside.

After lunch, we had Design Thinking Mindset.  We introduced our classmates to the teachers first.  Then, we went for a d. school tour.  D stands for design.  But we did some exercises before we went into the design school, such as needing to use our body to let people know what we were expressing.  We made the four seasons.  It was quite fun.  When we entered the design school, the room was silent.  The people were usually thinking of the things they were going to make.  The teachers also taught us why tables are designed in square shape.  It is interesting.  Then we went for a paper clip trade activity. The activity required us to take one paper clip and ask random strangers to trade us something more valuable in return. All of us traded something back, such as a pen, 1 US Dollar, etc.

Later on, we went for shopping in Stanford Shopping Centre.  All of us went to the Bath & Body Works.  There were a lot of shower gels, hand cream, etc inside.  We bought a lot of things there.  We went to have dinner in McDonalds.  The taste of the burger is better and cheaper than Hong Kong.

We are going to have a field trip tomorrow afternoon.  I hope it will be fun.

Group 7 - Day 11

First thing today after a filling, warm breakfast was our final class of the course: Visual Designing Part II. Mr. Scott was kind enough to allow us extra time to complete our final presentations which would be presented later on during the day. Apart from that, we were also given the option to work on our own designs freely. The whole kitchen had a homey, pleasant atmosphere where everyone could work in comfortable silence.

At around 3 pm, the final presentations finally began. We elaborated on our favourite class over the course of the past 2 weeks, and found that it was hardly a challenge to get the words flowing, so enthusiastic were we. We chose the class on neuroscience, applying it to the others, or other experiences, in general. The presentations of the other groups were also highly entertaining and interesting; we found there was a ton to learn from what the others thought as well. Finally, the certificates presented to us gave us a certain satisfaction as we now have a sort of record of the progress we’ve made on this incredible journey.

To end this fantastic day, we engaged in a ferocious water battle, shooting water balloons at each other, especially Mr. Wong, who was our unfortunate victim. We also dashed to go fountain hopping, a popular tradition of Stanford dwellers. Splashing water at each other, we had so much fun we couldn’t stop laughing. Thank goodness a hot shower was waiting for us back at the dormitories, marking an end to this fun-filled and accomplishing day.

Group 7 - Day 9

Day 9
The day started afresh with a class on visual designing, in other words, art. Sketches of basic shapes (cubes, cylinders, spheres, etc.) were made, shading was implemented and the formation of a narrative on paper was formed, allowing us to tell a story with pictures. Although some of us were not as artistically gifted as certain others, it was safe to say that we had 2 hours of new and innovating ideas.
A 30-minute drive after lunch later, we found ourselves before the renowned Computer Science Museum, where ideas came alive. There were over 20 fascinating exhibits on the history of the development of computer technology, including that of calculators, punch cards and analogue and digital computers. Apart from learning about the history of technological development, we also immersed ourselves in the sheer complexity of the machines designed by what we can only describe as geniuses. It truly astounds us how utterly brilliant these scientific pioneers’ brains were, or are.

Next stop was the billboard of Face book. We took a group photo, committing the moment to memory. Even though it was totally different from what we expected, we were still stunned by the enormous scale of Face book. After all, one must want to forever remember such a prestigious moment of their lives; it is only natural.
After dinner and a break, we set off to the Fire Pit where we enjoyed the gooey texture of the s’mores, consisting of two crackers sandwiching a warm, melted marshmallow. They were a real treat for us since such food items were not something we were accustomed to. Many photographs were also taken to mark this special moment in history.

Sunrise; they say it represents a new beginning.
Let us tell you who we are.
Once upon a time (2 weeks ago), 42 St Paul’s students boarded a plane to San Francisco. We are 5 of them.
5 students, unsure of what time it was, unsure of what was ahead of them, unsure of who they were.
2 weeks later, 2/3 of the questions were fully answered. The other one was … half answered. But for 15 year olds, that was a head start.
2 weeks ago, we arrived at the San Francisco airport at about 12 noon. 1st question answered.
Over the course of 2 weeks, we experienced productive and motivating lessons rich in information we’re irresolute in. We took part in recreational activities that helped the awkward and the shy improve their socializing skills, and helped the extroverts learn how to use their confidence to their full potential.
Not to mention, our sleeping habits were also forced to improve for the stressed, who used to sleep at 4am back in Hong Kong.  2nd question answered.
After a 2 HOUR car ride to the beach, our sadness and nostalgia was forgotten for a while.  A game of football was played to help us engage with chaperones and counselors. Even though our group had mixed views about the beach, we all ended up covered in sand, soaked in sea water, and embraced by the glow in our hearts.
And when we went for our last Sign Out, realization hit us like a bus: we were leaving Stanford. Forever.
Each student came to this trip for different reasons. Some wanted to be smarter (Stanford IS one of the top schools in the world after all). Some wanted to search for a new adventure. Some just wanted to escape from their pressurized lives.
We spent these 2 weeks with independence. There was nothing in our way, and we were in charge of our own paths in these golden days. We were ourselves.
Through diverse and remarkable activities, passions were discovered and pursued (in a short-term). Each and every day, characteristics were exposed and distinguished, and don’t forget: it happened in 2 weeks.
But we still had a long way to go, and this trip will forever be remembered as a dear, cherished memory, enclosed in our mind palaces forever. 3rd question, half answered.

Tonight, we will beg the serene moon to never fall, and the sun to never rise, so we can stay here for eternity.

It was finally the last day of Stanford. Today, we went to the beach in Capitola.

When we first arrived in Capitola, the weather was not as fine as the other day in San Francisco. The sky was not blue, it was very windy and all of us were very cold. However, when we arrived the beach the sun came out! It was warm and we enjoyed hanging around in the beach. The view was gorgeous and   ``1qfascinating; we rushed to the sea side and took a lot of pictures together. We played volleyball with our teachers and friends; the game was really exciting and fun.  After all these activities, we had our lunch in a fast food shop called “Five Guys” which was very famous in the United States. We tried many different kinds of burger. We felt so excited that we could try local fast food before we headed back to Hong Kong. The burgers were very delicious and we could feel the difference between the ones in Hong Kong.  In general, we had spent an amazing day in there.

To conclude this trip, our favorite activity was the San Francisco field trip. We knew and understood more about San Francisco and its history. Besides we took a lot of picture and recorded our beautiful memories with the fascinating views in San Francisco. We would like to come to U.S.  to recall our memories here. We are looking forward to the next San Francisco Trip.

Looking back to the past eleven days, from all interesting lessons to amazing field trips, we really experienced and learnt a lot from teachers and consolers.  We would never forget what we have learnt in these two weeks, we would also use the knowledge in our daily life. In addition to this, our friendship and bonding between classmates became stronger. We made new friends, we enjoyed our times playing and working together in the dorm.  We would like to thank all the people we met in this trip, without them, nothing could work successfully and we all would not have such a wonderful trip. We would never forget all the things happened in this trip.

Our lovely day began with the second session of Visual Design Thinking lesson. We focused on calligraphy and writing words artistically today. Our instructor, Professor Bill Scott, guided us through, using calligraphy pens to show us how to write our words neatly. It turned out that calligraphy was a challenging task as it was difficult to control our pens and we had to have a steady hand in order to write neatly in calligraphy. We had a wonderful time exploring the beauty and skill involved in calligraphy using special calligraphy pens. We also had a simulation game named 'start a company'. It reminded us of our Economics class, where we analyzed the cost and social conscience of the use of automobiles in the industry. We were shocked that we had already came up with ideas on starting a new automobile company in less than an hour's time. We understood that by exchanging ideas and communication with others, we could come up with more creative and outstanding ideas!

After lunch, we had our second session of our class 'Blogging Your Journey'. Our instructor, Ms Nada Milijkovic, gave us valuable advice on how to create an interesting blog. She taught us some effective means of communication and also discussed the development of journalism. She also allowed us time to work on our blogs. While typing a summary of our whole journey, we couldn't help but reminisce about the lovely days we have spent at Stanford.

Our Stanford tour hadn't come to an end yet - there are only 3 days left. Just the thought of this makes us feel sad as this has been a wonderful learning experience for us. Although we didn't have control over time at our disposal, having no time to slow down, we have enjoyed living in the moment and spending the remaining days meaningfully. We would treasure the remaining few days here at 'lalaland' where everything is simply perfect, and we hope to leave Stanford living our limited time to the fullest.

Being Saturday with no classes on the weekend, we had a field trip organized for our group at the Capitola Beach.  After breakfast, we got on the bus and arrived at the splendid Capitola Beach. Overflowing with excitement, the five of us darted straight towards the inviting  beach to get ourselves soaked in the refreshing sea water. For most of us, this was the first time to visit the Capitola beach or even  the United States. The sand definitely felt softer and the beach was surely cleaner than back home. We had a great time splashing through the water though it was quite cold and we all screamed in surprise at first. We took a lot of pictures and enjoyed playing volleyball and soccer on the beach. Besides spending time by the beach, our group also walked around the shops and restaurant by the beach side. There was a small shopping mall that we went which was not full of shops but the stores there were touristy, selling exotic and interesting stuff. For lunch, we headed to the Capitola Mall where we got the option to eat either at the fast food joint, ‘Five Guys’ known for its freshly made burgers or ‘Chipotle’ for Mexican food. All five of us voted for eating cheeseburgers with multiple toppings and milkshakes and we had a great time.  According to our group mate, Natalie, her strawberry banana milkshake was the best she had ever had.  The burgers too were moist and juicy and their flavor enhanced with the BBQ sauce and steak sauce.  Once lunch was over, we headed back the residence to rest and pack our things as sadly, we will be leaving tomorrow…
After completing all our packing for our flight the next day, we all signed out during free time to explore and walk around the campus. We went to the bookstore and bought souvenirs such as clothes and stationary. We also went to a convenient shop to buy some snacks for us to eat in the plane. We took a lot of pictures of the campus and were all amazed that it had been 2 weeks since we landed on this gorgeous campus.

Sadly, today is the last night of our stay at Stanford, and we will surely miss this amazing place. We will definitely make another visit here in the future and we are looking forward to studying here.

Today was the final day of our Stanford summer camp. Being Saturday, we had no lessons for the day but a field trip to the famous Capitola Beach had been organized.  The weather was a little cool and breezy and we loved it.  At the beach, it was certainly comfortable to sit down and enjoy the sound of waves under the warmth of the sun.  We hurdled together in the cool water s and took pictures together as the waves gently lapped our feet.  Our search for shells on the beach was successful and we took several as souvenirs.  These pretty shells will surely bring back for us sweet memories of the Capitola Beach.
After playing at the beach, we headed to the Capitola Mall for lunch.  On the high recommendation of the Stanford counselors, we had burgers, shakes and fries at Five Guys fast food outlet.   The burgers were definitely worth all the calories that came with it!  After this delicious lunch, we headed back to the campus.
Upon our arrival back to the campus, we were allowed sign out time, which meant we could step out of the residence and explore the campus.  Of course, we went straight to the Stanford Bookstore to buy souvenirs.

Our two weeks at Stanford have come to an end too fast and we cannot believe that our trip has flashed by in a blink of an eye.  Stanford is such a marvelous place with beautiful weather and warm and friendly people.  We are bound to be extremely nostalgic once we are back home in Hong Kong.

Group 8 Day 12

Day 12

This is our last day at Stanford. After our scrumptious breakfast, we went to Capitola. It was such a long ride. We first arrived at the Capitola beach; we immediately changed into our beach wear, put lots of sunscreen to prevent sun burnt and went into the sea to enjoy the sea breeze. We took lots of photos there and it was so comfortable soaking our feet into the sea water. We loved the beach so much! Then we played volleyball there with friends from other groups, it was our first time playing volleyball on the beach, this was so unforgettable. We enjoyed our time a lot at the beach today.

Afterwards, we went to the mall for lunch. There were two choices, burger and Mexican food. Our group chose to have burgers at Five Guys. We filled our cheese and bacon burger with lots of toppings and sauce like tomato, ketchup and mayonnaise. The beef was so juicy and the whole burger was just so delicious! After lunch, we went back to the dorm and had our last free time for sign out. Our group had our last Jamba Juice here in Stanford and did shopping at the market place and the Stanford bookstore. We bought so much snacks which were hard to find in Hong Kong that we could hardly put all our snacks into our suit cases. We ended our last dinner at Stanford with Buffalo wings. The wings were filled with garlic and sweet sauce and we couldn't stop eating. However, the sweet wings tasted different than we expected. It was a bit spicy that we needed cold drinks to cool us down.

Then, we went back to our rooms and packed our luggage. This is our last day here and we are going to miss this place so much. The day when all of us were struggling who our roommates were is still clearly printed in our minds. We have learnt so much here in Stanford during lessons and have had so much fun during field trips to San Francisco, Monterey and Capitola. We wish to spend more time here is Stanford!

16th July, 2016

Today was the second last day of our wonderful journey. We went to the Capitola Beach in the morning. Although the weather was a bit cold today, we still enjoyed the time playing with the sand and sea. We also took a lot of photos in front of the beautiful scenery. Although our pants were all wet after that, we did not regret to do that as the memories between us were priceless. We also bought a lot of delicious candies for our family and friends in a shop nearby. We had our lunch in a fast food shop called "Five Guys" in the afternoon. We enjoyed the meal but the size of the burger was larger than we expected, we already get very full even we hadn’t finished the whole burger!
Afterwards, we had a chance to sign out and had a walk in the campus for the very last time. The four of us and other friends had a walk in the campus, and we went to the bookstore, the Meyer Green, the Law School and many other places. We had a great time hanging out together in this magnificent campus for the last time, and we had taken a lot of photos as this was a precious experience to be connected with one of the most famous universities in the world. Instead of having a proper dinner, we decided to have snacks so that we could have more time to wander around in the campus in Stanford.
When we got back to our residence, we had our last house meeting and most of us were really sad and cried as the counselors continued their speech.
We had taken photos with all of our counselors and we hoped to reconnect with them and the Stanford University as we grew up, because it has been a great experience to spend time with our counselors and they have been taking care of all of us throughout the whole trip.

Reflection
Firstly, the unexpected weather in Capitola shocked us as it was cloudy and cold while the sun was shining brightly in Stanford. When we got into the sea and the water splashed onto our feet, we all shivered and backed off. Though the weather was cold, we had so much fun taking photos on the beach and in the shallow waters. Unfortunately, one of us got hurt as some sand infected her original wound and made her very painful. Luckily, we got immediate help from both teachers and counselors. Just before we left, we picked up beautiful shells from the sand as souvenirs and this marked the end of our journey. We were all sad to leave as this was both our last field trip in the United States. We certainly would not forget the wonderful memories with our friends of these thirteen days, having lessons, going on field trips, playing ball games.

We went to Capitola today and it was the last field trip in Stanford.  We arrived at the beach in the morning and the weather was cool and windy, which was not what we expected. We walked along a path to reach to the beach. The scenery was beautiful so we stopped by and took a few pictures.

Unlike the weather along the path, it turned out that the beach was sunny and warm. Once we were dismissed, we quickly found a place to put down our bags. The sand was soft and smooth, so we decided to take off our sandals and walked with bare foot.

Since we were announced that the water might be contaminated, we didn’t dare to swim in the sea. We buried our classmate’s feet and tried to build a sand castle on top of it. However, it collapsed within seconds.  After that, we changed our clothes, and walked towards the sea to take some photos. The sea water was icy and the wave was huge. We tried to conquer the wave but we failed to do so, ended up getting our shorts wet. Fortunately, we brought extra clothes for changing.

As our food prepared by Stanford’s cafeteria did not arrive, so the counselors decided to take us to the mall nearby to have lunch. We were separated into two groups, one going to Five Guys for burgers, while the others would go to Chipotle to enjoy their Mexican grill.

When we came back to the residence, surprisingly, we were given a chance to sign out. We went to the Stanford Bookstore to browse. Unfortunately, we had to learn the lesson of keeping a sharp eye on our belongings the hard way, as one of our friend’s drink was stolen. We still had a good time though, and the final shopping spree did much to lift our spirits.

After sign out and everyone were back in the dorm, we had our last house meeting. The consolers expressed their feelings on this camp. A sad feeling flowed in the air and we missed the days we went crazy during our stay. This was certainly an unforgettable and memorable experience. Through this trip, we learnt to be independent and how to take better care of ourselves. Also, we learnt to follow the rules strictly, and not to create inconvenience to others. We would treasure all the things we had acquired in this trip deeply.

Group 10 16/7/2016

This Saturday, we visited the beach in Capitola. It was quite windy at first, but then the weather became much better and the sun came out as we approached the beach. We took nice pictures with the beautiful scenery and played on the sand. The Californians were very friendly, they chatted with us and we shared our experiences in this journey to them. We all think that visiting the beach was a great opportunity to immerse in local California coast culture as well as enjoying ourselves. It was a really good way to relax especially after two weeks of intensive lectures.

After hanging around the beach, we went to some nearby shops and restaurants. To our surprise, there was one Thai restaurant which sells bubble tea! It's indeed very interesting to have a taste of Asian food at California coast. From this we learned the importance and the intriguing quality of culture exchange between the East and the West.

We could choose Mexican food or burger for our lunch. We applied decision making skills and chose Mexican food because we want to try some unique and traditional food at the States. We tried burritos with steak. It was amazing!

Surprisingly, we had a sign out time today. Not wasting this golden opportunity, we went out to explore more of the campus. The grasslands, fountains and buildings still appeared to be captivating and mesmerizing to us though we see them everyday. Today was our last day here and we couldn't help but feel nostalgic. Not only had we learnt academically, but we had also grown as a person and had definitely enjoyed our stay here.

Another day of an interesting lesson – today, we had a session on Effective Non-verbal Communication. Our instructor, Professor Jeff Cabili, taught us non-verbal communication skills such as posture, tone, eye contact, etc. that would be particularly effective in presentations. These useful tips will surely help us in applying them to communication in our daily lives.  The lesson was engaging as we had the opportunity to use paralanguage in our speeches.  Some of us even had the chance to deliver a 1-minute speech and we, the audience, were asked to provide feedback.

In the afternoon, the dreaded moment arrived when we had to give our final presentation.  After much preparation, we were finally ready to share with everyone what part of the summer program had the most impact on us. Unable to forget the awesome Napier Bones exhibit at the Computer History Museum, our group presented a replica of this exhibit, handcrafted by us from empty pizza boxes.  The audience was quite impressed with our demonstration.  We were certainly glad that we could apply what we have learnt into our final presentation!  Also, some of the skills learnt in our Effective Non-Verbal Communication lesson this morning were applied too.  We were glad that our final presentation went smoothly and we were extremely grateful that we would be able to accomplish so much and receive a certificate for our hard work during the past 2 weeks.  This has certainly been an amazing experience for us!

The highlight of our day was post dinner, when we had the time of our lives playing in the garden with water balloons. We splashed each other with water balloons and we were completely soaked. We especially enjoyed drenching our chaperoning teachers and it was amusing to see them run around in the garden! Then, we went to ‘the Claw’ for fountain-hopping. This was even more exciting as we all got totally soaked. We will treasure all these memories.

15th July, 2016

We had a visual design lesson today and we learnt more about creative art and drawing with confidence. We did an exercise on visual thinking and drawing, for example, using different fonts of various sizes to wrote out the characters of alphabets from A to Z with a permanent marker, then seeing how confident we are in ourselves. We were asked to first use a pencil or a colored pencil to draw a draft of all our letter, then trace them back with the permanent markers. Through this exercise, we had a boost in confidence as we learnt that even though we might make a mistake with our pencils and colored pencils, we could correct and overlap our mistakes and change our drawings by using that permanent marker. We also understood that making mistakes are perfectly fine, as they are a good way of learning, and that as long as we learn from our mistakes and change what we have done wrong; making mistakes aren't bad at all. We were also given three different choices- to continue with our previous construction, to begin a new sketch or to start a company and build a car.

Some of us chose the 2nd option, which was to design a new sketch. Some chose the 3rd option, which was to build a company and construct a new car. We all had fun doing our own little projects. The group mates that chose to design a new sketch sat outside in the lounge and shared their ideas on the new project. We combined all our ideas and art together and constructed our different ideas and we all applied the new things we learnt in our previous lessons about visual design and creativity. By the end of the lesson, both groups of people learnt that creativity didn’t only come from one person or any particular person, yet everyone put together would boost creativity and expand ideas. We also learnt that creativity can come is various ways from various people, and that by applying that creativity we can then succeed in making something new and original. The people who chose the 3rd choice and built a car also learnt about creativity, but in another method. We first wrote different car brand names like BMW, Benz, Acura and anything that has similar function with cars like bicycle, train, horse on little memo sheets and stick onto a big drawing paper. After combining and elaborating our ideas, we finally came out to have a car to have 6 wheels, 4 seats and self-driving. By putting our ideas together, we managed to compose a weird but creative and original car.

We also gained insight on how we should judge media from our own perspectives. We learnt that not all media is made equal. Bloggers can put forth any opinion on any topic, with no qualifications required. This might harm the person the blogger may writing about or harm the person in various ways. Also, the biography offered by the author might or might not be entirely true. Anyone can say whatever they want on a blog, so it is quite unsafe for teens nowadays to trust everything the media puts out there and says. Blogs used to be the places where people got the most trustworthy information before, and at the time, people really believed in blogging and the blogs people put out on t eh internet. However, the internet is dangerous and can be full of fakes, so we have to be aware of our beliefs and we mustn’t believe everything the internet says these days.

We also learnt more about better communication. Communication is when there is feedback and overall it consists of 3 things. The first is to listen to the speaker and receive the information. Then we are supposed to decode the message and to give feedback that we have heard the message. Communication can be compared to that of a tennis match, like the back and forth of a tennis match. There are also different types of medium and communication, for example radio station broadcasting through a transmitter, phone calling and texting. To transmit a message, or to know if someone’s listening or not, a person can see if people have called the show to give on opinion, or to leave a text message and voice out their comments and their opinions. Newspapers and magazines however, have a different method of transmitting information. Feedback on an article in the newspaper can be recorded by the editorial page by writing to the editor, or by commenting on their websites or blogs.

Reflection

Today, we had our very last visual design lesson, and we had a great time today. For the first part, we have practiced calligraphy. We have learnt how to improve our handwriting and the importance of having good handwriting. A neat and tidy handwriting can impress people and may also give an artistic quality, so we are going to apply what we have learnt in this session in our daily life by trying to improve our handwriting and please our teachers with tidy homework. During the second part of the lecture, we have been divided into groups and we focused on different work - some of us started new individual sketches, and the others work on a design, such as designing a car of the future, in groups.
Most of us chose to participate the last activity, “establishing a company”, which means we had to make something new and special by combing all our ideas together. In today’s lesson, we decided to make a car. We first wrote different car brand names like BMW, Benz, Acura and anything that has similar function with cars like bicycle, train, horse on little memo sheets and stick onto a big drawing paper. We got endless ideas and we use a large amount of memos to write our ideas on, the process was fun! After combining and elaborating our ideas, we finally came out to have a car to have 6 wheels, 4 seats and self-driving. Although it seems weird and funny, we enjoyed this activity as it gave us a chance to strengthen our team work and let us to be more creative. We were all so impressed in our unique invention!
After this session, we have learnt that we can unleash our creativity and come up with a new idea immediately; on the other hand, we have also learnt how to work with others and how we will benefit from it, for example, we can exchange ideas and know more about other people's thinking. This skill would be very useful when we are doing group project as we can know more about others' thoughts and hence improve the quality of the output.

We also found the internet blogging lesson very useful for our everyday life as the teacher us how to avoid being fooled on the internet. We should believe in professional journals, books and documentaries other than blogs on the internet as people could fool around using fake identities. After the teacher gave some examples of internet fraud, we were so shocked about the various methods of the swindlers that we swore to be more careful of the internet in the future. For example, some people will disguise as experts on the web and spread false information in order to deceive people. Last but not least, we learnt how to comment on other classmates’ blogs. We appreciated it and found it fun to do so as we could make use of all our resources and communicate more with our classmates. We could make new friends or strengthen our friendship by then.

Today began with longing for this program to never end! We attended our very last lesson at Stanford on ‘Effective Non-verbal Communication’. This was a practical and very useful lesson which would help us not just in our school presentations but also in our later lives. Our teacher told us all about the little details of what we should do with our physical actions, movements and voices while giving a speech. We now know where should our hands be, where we should look, how to make good use of our pitch, volume, and speed of delivery. We even learned how to shake one's hand properly in order to leave a good first impression. Towards the end, Natalie and Doris both volunteered to present a one-minute speech in front of the class. Natalie talked about how she learned Swahili, while Doris talked about how she got into ostrich breeding. Although everyone in the audience knows perfectly well that none of this was true, we still enjoyed their speeches and it was a lot of fun listening to their bizarre stories.
Save the best for last – well, that was what it was in the afternoon when we had to make our final presentations. The source of our inspiration for this presentation was our Decision Making class.  Our group presented a scenario in which a character is kidnapped. To arrive at a decision of what the kidnappee should do, we made use of a decision quality chain that we had learnt in class earlier.  We explained how to have a helpful frame, clear values, creative alternatives, useful information, sound reasoning and commitment of taking action. This helped in presenting the possible choices and allowing our classmates to come up with other creative alternatives.  With the help with the decision making chain, we evaluated the decisions that were given and tried to choose the best option. With four possibilities provided – call for help, free yourself and run away, attack your kidnapper and last but not least, our classmate’s creative idea, just sit and wait for help. The five of us definitely enjoyed our classmate’s presentation, one of the groups even made up a case to re-create the mock trial elements, to really show that they’ve learnt so much from the Stanford summer program. Ending the session with presentation of certification, we could not help ourselves feeling sad, thinking that we would be leaving this beautiful campus soon. Our group surely hoped that we had more time to spend in this amazing campus.

The most exhilarating part of the trip came in the evening. We had a massive water balloon fight! It was incredibly exciting to hit water balloons at each other and even our beloved teachers were not spared! We all had the time of our lives. Since California is facing a drought right now, we decided to stop the fight after 3 rounds and we all went fountain hopping instead. In high spirits, we rushed down to The Claw and all hopped in without a second thought. We brought bottles and cups to scoop water and splashed at each other. We were all wet and a bit cold by the end, but we still had an amazing time. We would like to thank the counselors for organizing this and we all had great memories to keep for a lifetime thanks to their effort. Last but not least, don’t forget to protect the environment!

Blog 10 (15/7/2016)

We walked to the Stanford Education Building with heavy hearts. Today was the last day of our lectures, and we tried our best to hold back our sentimental tears.
Our last lesson in the short 2 weeks was Non-verbal Communication. This lesson prepared us for the upcoming final presentation and speeches, and we learnt to use different gestures, expressions, tones and volumes to gain our audiences’ attention. Our ludicrous lecturer, who gave us the proper, effective tips on presenting confidently, was a perfect example of entertainment brilliance, hooking us in with his delightful speaking skills.  And with that, our list of courses ended on a sweet note, and we left the Education Building in lingering bliss.
Disclaimer: the following events brought tears to 3 of our group mates’ eyes, some sobbing harder than others, whereas the remaining 2 were cold-hearted -.-
In yesterday’s blog, we promised to tell you what our idea was, and of course, we will fulfill it. All of us agreed that the mock trial was our favorite course, so we chose to act one out by implementing the skills from Monday’s lesson, but with a new case: Maisy Lai was caught outside her room at 2am, and she claims to be going to the bathroom. The audience, acting as the judge and jurors, must decide after the trial whether she should be found guilty or not.
It’s genius, we know.
All groups gave superb delivery about their favorite moments. We were called out one by one to get our certificates, then followed by our head counselor Tyler giving a concluding speech, the tears came flooding out like the Red Sea. We wanted to stay in the green, grassy fields of Stanford forever until the end, and the nostalgia was overwhelming. We will cherish these fruitful memories for the rest of our lives.
We finally got to let loose and be free in an unexpected water balloon fight. At least, it started off with water balloons. Things escalated quickly when people started getting cups of water, chasing after an ideally chosen, unsuspecting victim with dripping hair and evil cackles. Even though we are still shivering while typing this blog, it was definitely worth it.

We loved each and every moment – the good, the bad and the weird.

Group 8 Day 11

Day 11

This is our last day having lessons at Stanford. After breakfast, we head back to our dorm for visual design lesson. Today, we drew objects found in the story we made up. In our group, one of us drew the Golden Gate Bridge, one drew the city hall, another drew pier 39 and the last one drew the japanese tea garden. We enjoyed ourselves so much sketching and coloring. We loved the lesson so much. This was our last lesson here in Stanford and we are going to miss the lessons here so much.

Since it was the last lesson date and we are having another field trip tomorrow, we had a final presentation today. The groups took turns to share their favourite part of this trip. We did some sketches on different buildings such as Walt disney family museum, california academy of sciences, san francisco city hall... We expressed our feelings about the different sightseeings we came across during the bus tour. Then the directors of this programme presented certificates to everyone of us as we have all completed the summer course. At last, two students gave the thank you speech. It was touching and sad as we did not want to leave Stanford.

The highlight of today was the water balloon fight after the dinner. We had been looking forward to this event since yesterday. When we saw all the colourful balloons, we were all excited and were ready to play. We threw the water balloons at the garden in our dormitory to each other and we got all wet. Everyone were very happy and screamed a lot when playing. We were overexcited and the balloons were quickly used up. Therefore, we used cups and water bottles to fill them with water and splash to each other. We had a fun time despite our clothes and shorts got soaked and we felt very cold.

To extend our craziness, we all went to the Stanford fountain, The Claw, to have a fountain hopping. It was really a remarkable and today's most thrilling activity as we could not do that in Hong Kong public fountains. We all brought our 'weapons' like cups and plastic boxes to splash water to one another. This had revealed a completely different side of us when we were splashing water to one another crazily. We were all wet from head to body yet enjoyed the whole process. However, after the water fight, some of us had pain in their ears as water rushed into them. In the whole, it was undoubtedly an unforgettable and awesome experience for all of us and we hope to spend the rest of our days here in Stanford fruitfully.

Times flies, today was already the eleventh day of our Stanford study tour.

We had the opportunity to learn the nonverbal communication which consisted of eye contact, body language, distance, voice and modulation and the use of silence. One of the most important tips from the lesson was the use of silence, as we often thought that communication need sound and noise, however the power of silence was far more significant. The lesson definitely reinforced its importance and it reminded us that we could also use silence in a good way in order to become a better speaker. Besides we should also remove void filler in our speeches in order to sound clearer and became more presentable. The void fillers should be replaced by silence so that everything would make more sense. Another tip which we think was extremely effective in real life was the use of distance as we never thought that distance was such an important tool in a communication.  In addition different cultural background could lead to different distance of comfort, it would be important for us later in life when we started working with different people with diverse background. We learnt to use an effective way in communication and it was really useful for us as it taught us about different skills and techniques for a effective communication.

The second highlight of today must be the most exciting and attractive activities throughout the whole trip, it was the final presentation for our Stanford study tour. Every group was well-prepare for their presentation and ready to express their feelings of this tour. Our group had prepared a short drama for our favorite activities and an individual reflection on different lessons in the trip. Our favorite activity was the San Francisco field trip and four of us have chosen to talk about the visual design, neuroscience, and legal studies lesson for our presentation. We presented with dialogue and make it more interesting. We think group 2 did the best as they have prepared for already a few days and they made a video for their presentation. Their presentation was interactive with games and questions. We all enjoyed our times and we all became more close to each other.
We were all inspired by the speech of the consolers and our classmates, we were all being very touched in a warm atmosphere as we recalled all memories in here, we treasured our times in here and we would never forget it.
